Augmented Territories

Students: Alexandros Charidis, Stephen Chou, Theodoros Kyttas, Eliza Montgomery, Anna Obraztsova, Vasilis Papakonstantinou

The landscapes of river deltas are constantly being transformed through systems of water and matter redistribution. In our investigations, algae was identified as a lifeform whose growth corresponds to the confluence of different matters and water bodies, while its distribution is influenced by topographic formations and water flows. Our intervention seeks to exploit algae cultivation and biofuel production processes, and propose new materialities that produce alternative landscapes, and provide opportunities for new programs and habitation.

City of Mussels

18 Nov

Students: Elena Boutsivari, Michael Georgopoulos, Jaclyn Jung, Periklis Kyriakidis, Aaron Mark, Vasiliki-Maria Plavou

This new approach to the Thermaikos Gulf allows for the connection of four mussel islands through the creation and bridging of two aquatic paths, thus extending the lively environment of Thessaloniki to the delta of the River Axios. The urban route of the Eastern coast provides access to the islands located along the eco-tourist path of the Western shore, which act as four poles of diversity and productivity. Each island functions as mussel cultivation, providing opportunities for culture, education and industry as well as a new public space for leisure activities. The annual calendar of events follows the life cycle of the mussels and culminates with Mussel Fest, the harvesting and feasting of the mussels in November. Furthermore, the islands are agents of de-pollution and environmental clean up, aimed at increasing the awareness of the battered conditions of the Axios River. Small filtration pods migrate to different aggregations to act as filters, break walls, or for event awareness.

Thursday 21st July @ 16:00 (skype lecture)

Room L1, Bissell Library,Anatolia College of Thessaloniki

ecoLogicStudio

ecoLogicStudio is an architectural and urban design studio co-founded in London by Claudia Pasquero and Marco Poletto. In the past few years the studio has built up an international reputation for its innovative work on ‘systemic’ design; ecoLogicStudio’s method is defined by the combination and integration of systemic thinking, bio and socio-logic research, parametric design and rapid prototyping techniques. Completed projects include a public library, private villas, large facades and eco-roofs; ecoLogic has developed prototypes and installations for the most important Architectural Biennales, including Venice in 2008 and 2010 [STEMv3.0 the lagoon experiment, The ecological Footprint grotto], Seville [STEMcloud], Istanbul [Fibrous room] and Milan Fuorisalone [ Aqua Garden].

ecoLogic runs international Workshop and cultural activities like the Architectural Machines Symposium at the AA in 2009, the Fibrous Structures workshop, Prototyping the city in Turin, ICAMP in Messina, Tropic Playground in Linz, to name a few.

ecoLogic is starting a publishing activity with booklets like the “Casa Lightwall”, the Cybergardens, and the AA INTER10 09/10 book titled “World Dubai Marine Life Incubators”.

Claudia and Marco are currently writing a new book on Systemic Architecture and they are Unit Master at the Architectural Association in London and Visiting Master tutors at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Cataluña (IAAC) in Barcellona.

MID REVIEW: FRIDAY JULY 15, 12pm – 3pm

REQUIREMENTS: 1 PHYSICAL MODEL OF THE ARCHITECTURAL PROTOTYPE

In the model, please attempt to combine local elements and techniques with digitally fabricated/ laser cut parts, as well as mechanical and electrical hardware

>> DIGITAL PRESENTATION INCLUDING:

>> THE PROPORSAL IN A MICRO-SCALE [how the prototypes perform, the function of mechanisms etc]

>> THE PROPORSAL IN A MACRO-SCALE [how the prototypes proliferate in the territory and occupy space, what are the strategies of occupation]

>> DIAGRAMS OF PROGRAM IN DIFFERENT SEASONS IN RELATION TO THE FLUCUATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

>> A DIGITAL 3D MODEL IN RHINO (OR MAYA, 3D MAX, ETC) OF THE PROTOTYPE

>> ARCHITECTURAL DRAWINGS ILLUSTRATING THE INTERACTION OF VISITORS WITH DIFFERENT SPECIES AND OR PROCESSES AND THE OBSERVATION OF THE SPECIES BY PEOPLE IN SECTIONS, 3              DIMENSIONAL SECTIONS AND FEEDBACK DIAGRAMS

ASSIGNMENT |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| macro-scale & mid scale |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

In assignment 2, four groups of students will be combined in two in order to connect their research in a macro scale. The bird/flow control group will be combined with the animals/carving group, while the plants/accretion group will be combined with the mussels/filtration group.

Each group is required to produce proposals for the area by using their prototypes as DNA units that propagate in a larger scale. You should devise strategies for the occupation of the territory in relationship to the fluctuations of the ground, the seasons, the microclimates, local conditions etc. The program in a macro-scale should be developed temporally proposing different types of activities, festivals and events in different time periods, as well as the potential development of the area in phases. A new factor to be taken into consideration is the introduction of visitors coming from Thessaloniki port by boat.

How do the visitors interact with the indigenous species? How do they participate in the advancement of the ecology of the area and observe the species without disturbing them? How may we develop a new type of ecological park which accommodates human occupation as well as provides a safe habitat for the animals? How does the overall proposal address issues of pollution from the industrial zone that infiltrate the wetland? What is the relationship of the proposal to the city? Are there any visual connections?

Students are requested to provide the assemblage of their prototype and its distribution to a larger scale as well as consequent network of connections. The prototype will be proliferated, mutated while migrating to different locations. Local behavior is affecting the overall system and connections’ matrix is transferring the equilibrium from one machinic unit to another.

Units accumulation and collective behavior can be thought with different design tools.

Swarm systems [ How to use the main characteristics of a swarm system, separation, cohesion and alignment in order to control the assemblage of your units]

Fractal behavior and recursion [How you can work with generations and dynamically growing systems where new elements are added to the “container”]

Fluid dynamics that affect objects [How fluid movements and water particles’ vectors can affect your units and their subcomponents that may vary from soft to rigid bodies].

Agent systems [How objects with specific set of behavioral properties carry information and affect the behavior of their neighbors]

Each one of the two groups will select one or more ways of designing their system of connections, distribution and mutation. Units should accumulate, alter their behavior and form, (size, analogy of subcomponents etc.) while taking into consideration the two types of inhabitants / species and how they can co-exist in this additional eco-system but also how human interaction can be inserted without harming the equilibrium state of such an environment.

Groups should work towards interactivity, collective intelligence, and behavior control but also the analogy of technology needed to be embedded in a natural eco-system so that this ecosystem can be completed and protected from natural and artificial threats.
